The Canadian Consortium for Humanitarian Training (CCHT) is pleased to announce that the 2015 Edition of the Disaster and Humanitarian Response Training Program will be held from May 4-17 in Montreal, Quebec. This exciting, multi-disciplinary training program that includes in class learning and a 3-day field simulation, will provide students and mid-career professionals with the core humanitarian competencies that are essential for anyone involved in disaster response and/or humanitarian assistance. Participants will learn about the background and context of humanitarian emergencies, international humanitarian law, doctrines and operating procedures for technical areas. Instructed by a community of humanitarians and faculty from around the globe the program also offers an occasion to join an exciting network of humanitarians.

Graduate-level university students from across the country and professionals regardless of trade that have a strong interest in joining the humanitarian community. Should you prefer another place to stay, you can easily find something on Airbnb or in a nearby hostel because the venue is centrally located Description This training includes up to 60 hours of training over a 9-day period (in-classroom training) and a 3-day field-based Disaster Simulation Exercise. The program offers a practical and in-depth analysis of the complex issues and competencies needed to engage in humanitarian work. Throughout students will gain familiarity with the humanitarian context/system and with the primary frameworks in the humanitarian field work, including International Humanitarian Law, humanitarian principles and Code of Conduct, Sphere Standards as well as other quality and accountability initiative. The focus will be on practical issues that arise form the technical areas of intervention and operational approaches, such as rapid public health assessments, field cluster sampling techniques, and application of minimum standards for food security, public health, logistics, education, WatSan (Water and Sanitation), protection, project management. Topic also include relations with other actors of a humanitarian space and core competencies such as leadership, team effectiveness, professionalism, self-care and key notions in security and safety. The content is informed on the common competencies framework for the humanitarian sector developed by the Consortium of British Humanitarian Agencies (CBHA). SimEx The Simulation Exercise is designed to simulate a complex humanitarian emergency. For the participant, this involves understanding cultural context, war, natural disaster and forced migration of the local population in addition to other challenges injected to add stress to the participants. Participants are in the simulation for 72 hours, working in multidisciplinary humanitarian teams to perform a series of activities such as assessments of the affected population, organize food distribution, conduct press conference, participate in cluster meeting, and more.
Upon your successful participation in the 9-day classroom training and 3-day field based Disaster Simulation Exercise you will receive a Certificate of Completion for Canadian Disaster and Humanitarian Response Training Program organized by the Humanitarian Studies Initiative in collaboration with the Canadian Consortium for Humanitarian Training. This is professional educational program not a university credited full time program. Credits can be given on a had hoc basis upon examination of demand.
